Daimler, founded in Coventry in 1896, is the oldest British motor marque and was supplier to the Royal Family for half a century. The SP250 of 1959, a glassfibre roadster with a 2.5-litre V8 designed by Edward Turner, was to have been called the Dart, a name dropped after Chrysler objected. Jaguar bought Daimler in 1960 and fitted this V8 into the Mk2 body: the 2.5 V8 (1962–1969) is the only Daimler-engined Daimler of the Jaguar era. The Sovereign of 1966 was derived from the Jaguar 420.
