Carl F. W. Borgward built a complete group in Bremen, with Lloyd and Goliath, and his eponymous marque at the top of the range. The Isabella of 1954 was his masterpiece: a modern saloon with a monocoque body, independent suspension and a 1.5-litre engine, built in around 200,000 examples, with a 1957 coupé of rare elegance. In 1961 the group was put into liquidation in circumstances still debated today, even though the order books were full. The Isabella remains the most sought-after German car of its era.
