August Horch, forced out of the company that bore his name, founded a second one in 1909 and christened it Audi, the Latin translation of “Horch” (“listen”). The four rings of 1932 recall the union with DKW, Horch and Wanderer. Having come under Volkswagen's control in 1965, the marque was only supposed to build rebadged DKWs: the engineer Ludwig Kraus developed the Audi 100 in secret, and its success in 1968 saved the marque's independence. The 100 S coupé of 1969, with lines inspired by American fastbacks, was built in around 30,000 examples up to 1976.
